Vacuum cleaners by brand
Many people are brand loyal and prefer to buy from a manufacturer they have been impressed by in the past. So for your convenience we also list our vacuum cleaner best buys by brand:
Bosch vacuum cleaners

Electrolux vacuum cleaners
Henry hoovers
Miele vacuum cleaners

Vax vacuum cleaners
There are two types of vacuum cleaner. They both have their pros and cons.
Upright vacuum cleaners
Good points:
The brush bar makes them more suitable for carpeted homes as the bristles dislodge dirt and pet hairs from the fibres before sucking them up.
Bad points:
Generally heavier than a cylinder model.
Less practical for harder to reach areas such as stairs, and unsuitable for upholstery. However, a quick browse of some of the upright models in our vacuum cleaner reviews will show that some manufacturers have tackled this issue with the addition of a telescopic wand.
Cylinder vacuum cleaners
Good points:
Lighter than most upright versions.
Easier to vacuum awkward areas such as stairs, under furniture and in tight corners.
Bad points:
Because they don't have a brush bar they aren't so effective on carpets or rugs. However, they are better on hard floors because they rely on their powerful suction.
Bagged vacuum cleaners versus bagless vacuum cleaners
Bagless
Good points:
Saves money as there is no outlay for replacement bags.
No worries about the manufacturer ceasing to make compatible dust bags.
Bad points:
Emptying the dust compartment may trigger a reaction in people with a severe dust allergy.
Bagged
Good points:
Better for allergy sufferers.
Bad points:
Unless you vacuum very rarely, it can work out far more expensive in the long run due to the cost of vacuum bags.
Other points to consider
Weight
Most people would benefit from a lightweight model. A cumbersome model is going to be particular problem if you have back problems or live in a home with lots of stairs.
Pets
To be honest, the top rated vacuum cleaners are so powerful that they should tackle pet hair well. But if your cat of dog really sheds, consider a vacuum cleaner specifically designed with pet owners in mind. Upright models are typically good for hair removal, but some cylinder models have attachments for the purpose too.
Storage
Finally, where are you going to keep your vacuum cleaner? Size and design are important to consider if you have limited storage.
